The rich, layered wit, humor and resonance of some of the tales may sail over the heads of pre- schoolers, but slightly older children (and their enthusiastic moms and dads) will be entranced by Breathed's stories and illustrations, and find themselves returning to his books week in and week out. Yes, they're really that good. Mars Needs Moms Synopsis. Every so often a bunch of kids are born on mars. The supervisor (Mindy Sterling). Mars Needs Moms jettisons Breathed's breathtaking art, sense of endless wonder and indispensable characters in favor of the motion captured work- in- perpetual- progress animation of Robert Zemeckis' Image. Movers Digital; vast, unsettling uncanny valley and all. But even if your family isn't familiar with Breathed's beautifully penned story, Mars Needs Moms is too generic and uneven a film to stir up much excitement. The remainder of the film is an exercise in expanding a short tale into an eighty- plus- minute family- friendly adventure. Inevitably, some of it works, some of it doesn't. Milo befriends an older, not- so- much- wiser Mars- stranded Earthling, a subterranean survivor named Gribble (Dan Fogler), and soon discovers that the Martians, led by the villainous Supervisor (Mindy Sterling), are preparing to transplant his mother's maternal instincts into a fleet of robots tasked with rearing their unruly children. Milo's weight was less on Mars than Earth, which would. Discuss this movie with other users on IMDb message board for Mars Needs Moms (2011) Recent Posts. To Milo's dismay, though, the process will kill dear ol' Mom. And as much as he hates eating broccoli and cleaning up his room, he certainly doesn't want to see the source of his misery come to any harm. Of course, Milo soon learns that he's been taking his mother for granted all along and, in the race to save her life, learns a little something about himself and growing up as well. But in filling out Breathed's otherwise simple story, Mars Needs Moms loses its focus. Gribble slowly comes to terms with painful memories and ghosts from his past, the Supervisor's sinister role in her planet's social structure is revealed, a free- spirited Martian named Ki (Elisabeth Harnois) uncovers shocking secrets and races to enlighten her people, the Martian males are oppressed from birth and banished to the lower levels of the city.. Milo's personal plight isn't just one of many; the poor kid is given as much attention as the next guy (or Martian as it were). What should be the planet- traipsing adventure of a boy rescuing his mom turns into an adventure, a liberation story, an empowerment fable, a tear- stained tragedy, a generation- gap comedy, a morality tale and an at- times frightening Mother- in- Peril thriller all mashed into one. And, oh, how younger viewers will cower. After seeing one mother vaporized in a Martian machine by the rising sun, little kids are sure to bury their heads as far under the covers as they can anytime a character is in danger. It's a bit mean- spirited, actually. A memory is triggered of a devastating event (grab those tissues), a boy sits helpless in a ravine as the clock ticks down, an electrified needle extends towards a mother's forehead (for what seems like an eternity) as her terrified son tugs at a jammed latch, and a broken helmet spells doom for one (then two) characters as each one gasps for air that isn't there (again, for what seems like an eternity). I'm all for toughening kids up with darker themes and what not, but Mars Needs Moms almost enjoys torturing the kiddies; in the case of my six- year- old son, to nearly unbearable ends. The film's sense of humor doesn't help much either, as the vast majority of the jokes - - many of which hinge on '7. Martian hijinks and little else. Yet for all its missed opportunities and inconsistencies, all is not lost. Mars Needs Moms is decent family fare teeming with enough laser- blasting action, low- gravity heartstrings and roaring rocketship adventuring to entertain your brood, at least for the better part of a rainy evening. The actors' performances are fittingly infectious, even if their voices deliver far more emotion and energy than their motion- captured faces. Dusky is given the most challenging task (as he didn't have the chance to run around a set like everyone else), but the kid handles his mic like a pro, capping off what Green started without succumbing to the sleepy lull of the voiceover booth. The Wells' script is lively and sure- footed too, which is a godsend considering how often their adaptation gets bogged down by the hydra that is their seven- headed story. Yes, the screenplay is chunky. Contrived, crowded and saddled with exposition, no doubt. But, to their credit, it's rarely overwhelming. The two whip from scene to scene with ease, hone the mounting tension with laser- like precision, and tie up every loose end in quick, satisfying succession. Even their three- pronged endgame - - Save Mom! Liberate the Martians! And, while I'm not a big fan of the film's animation - - The dead eyes! The wooden appendages! The labored facial expressions! Even Milo looks pretty good (for a virtual incarnation of a pre- teen Seth Green), meaning Cusack and Fogler are the only players forced to bear the brunt of the mo- cap curse for any substantial length of time. Milo's mother is, to quote my son, . Breathed's story and illustrations are so clear in my mind's eye that I have a hard time seeing anything but the film's squandered potential. That said, even those unfamiliar with the original tale will struggle with everything from the animated adaptation's plotting to its pacing to the animation itself. I would recommend renting Mars Needs Moms and buying the book. Your money and time will be better spent. I did notice some exceedingly minor, arguably negligible banding, but it's so faint and fleeting, so innocuous, that I hesitate to even mention it. Mars Needs Moms is stunning, and color, contrast and clarity are impeccable. Mars' palette is substantially darker than most computer animated films (shadows lord over the Martian fortress and darkness drapes over the underground reaches of the planet), but there's a richness to the colors; an arresting fullness that, uncanny valley notwithstanding, bolsters the relative realism of the sun- dusted planet, its dazzling underground caverns, Ki's vivid graffiti paints, the blue glow of Gribble's command consoles, the stark white corridors of the sterile halls, and the lush, green respite of Earth. Every pixel is on point as well, and the encode is wonderfully proficient. Detail never falters, fine textures are as refined and precisely- resolved as they should be, and artifacting, aliasing, noise and other alien invaders are held at bay. Simply put, I can't imagine Mars Needs Moms could look much better than it does here. Disney's DTS- HD Master Audio 7. Martians and liberates the oppressed in engaging, enveloping succession, delivering a dauntless sonic experience more immersive than the adventure it accompanies. Milo's misadventures with broccoli and early arguments with his mother fail to impress - - flat and front- heavy as they are - - but the moment the boy stows away aboard a spaceship bound for Mars, the mix doesn't relent. LFE output is weighty, able- bodied and authoritative, yet not so domineering that it overwhelms lighter elements in the soundscape. Rear speaker activity is nimble and aggressive, filling the soundstage with painstakingly accurate directional effects (whooshes, whizzes and weens), involving ambience and convincing acoustics. Mars Needs Moms sounds fantastic and tops off Disney's AV presentation magnificently.

Phantasm (1. 97. 9) - Rotten Tomatoes. Phantasm is a surprisingly artful and imaginative horror film, an impressive film for 2. Don Coscarelli who worked with a miniscule budget to create a small masterpiece. When Mike (Michael Baldwin) spies some sinister Jawa- like creatures stealing corpses from the local cemetery, he and his older brother Jody (Bill Thornbury) explore the mausoleum, where they find that the mortician (Angus Scrimm), a towering, emaciated figure with superhuman strength, has somehow bridged the gap between Earth and the afterworld and needs fresh corpses. Among the tools of his trade is a flying Swiss army pinball that bores into the skulls of its hapless victims then extracts their brains. Their allies die off one by one, until only the brothers are left to defend humankind against the nefarious . While the film does contain a fair amount of graphic violence, the gore is never gratuitous and, relative to other movies of its day, is used rather sparingly. The effects are fantastic as is the highly stylized direction; the result is a memorable chiller with more than its share of genuine shocks. That is, some parts were obviously a fantasy, a dream (i. Reggie's murder by The Lady in Lavender) while others actually happened and were strictly for real (i. Nevertheless, it is never clearly stated what is a dream and what is not, so we have to draw our own conclusions in relation to many other elements of the story. Of course, this explanation would be valid if we take Phantasm as a stand- alone film. Nevertheless, if we take the sequels into account, we discover in Phantasm II that Mike is still asleep and dreaming during the ending of the previous installment. The Tall Man's apparition in his closet mirror, the fight between Reggie and the dwarves to rescue him and the blowing of the house are all part of the same nightmare. After this, Mike is interned in the Morningside Psychiatric Clinic for 7 years, receiving treatment for what his doctor considers to be just a figment of his imagination. After being released, he insists in believing that everything was real while even Reggie claims it was just a paranoid delusion. 11/30/2016 Adventures Of Mary-Kate & Ashley: The Case Of The Volcano Mystery - new dvd releases this monthRead NowAdventures of Mary- Kate and Ashley: The Case of the Volcano Mystery Full Movie Download Free. It is a discordant note that matches well to the disturbing mood of the poem. Whatever hope is yours,Was my life also; I went hunting wild. After the wildest beauty in the world,Which lies not calm in eyes, or braided hair,But mocks the steady running of the hour,And if it grieves, grieves richlier than here. For by my glee might many men have laughed,And of my weeping something has been left,Which must die now. I mean the truth untold,The pity of war, the pity war distilled. Now men will go content with what we spoiled. Or, discontent, boil bloody, and be spilled. They will be swift with swiftness of the tigress,None will break ranks, though nations trek from progress. Courage was mine, and I had mystery; Wisdom was mine, and I had mastery; To miss the march of this retreating world. Into vain citadels that are not walled. Then, when much blood had clogged their chariot- wheels. I would go up and wash them from sweet wells,Even with truths that lie too deep for taint. I would have poured my spirit without stint. But not through wounds; not on the cess of war. Foreheads of men have bled where no wounds were. I am the enemy you killed, my friend. I knew you in this dark; for so you frowned. Yesterday through me as you jabbed and killed. I parried; but my hands were loath and cold. Let us sleep now . The Taint of Eugenics In NIMH- Funded Research Today. Recently, Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, identified the . Here are 1. 0 breakthroughs and events of 2. For the past 3. 0 years (or even longer), leaders in the field have regularly told of . Here are the titles for the top five: Complexity: Discovering New Sources of Genetic Variance. Transcriptome: Developing Brains Have Unique Molecular Signatures. Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells: Disease in a Dish. De Novo Genetic Variants. Epigenomics: How Experience Alters Behavior. If your initial response is like mine, you may be tempted to say: what a bunch of molecular gobbledygook. But then I took a deep breath and sought to identify, in a more clear- headed way, why this list is so disappointing. The first reason is a practical one. Researchers have spent the last 3. In fact, it is proving so barren that many drug companies are shutting down their efforts to develop new psychiatric drugs, precisely because such research has failed to identify promising new molecular targets. So why keep on pursuing this tack? Might it be time to put our federal dollars into research more likely to produce a therapeutic benefit? But the second reason for disappointment is the more important one. In it, he concluded that it was nature, rather than nurture, that made the superior man. Thus, he argued, humans were decidedly unequal. Democratic ideals that men were of . Many believed that a large influx of non- WASP immigrants was weakening the country. Soon, American eugenicists were busily ranking ethnic groups along a . Eugenicists then argued that in order to keep America strong, it was necessary to encourage those with . Other states followed suit, and by 1. However, the problem with such laws, eugenicists lamented, was that few people seeking a marriage license declared themselves insane. The insane, one eugenicist noted, are . They needed to be locked up and kept there until their breeding years passed. In 1. 90. 7, Indiana had become . Supreme Court declared such state laws constitutional. By the end of 1. 94. Americans had been sterilized under such laws, 2. As such social policies took hold, a number of scientists at top colleges promoted eugenics as a science. By 1. 91. 4, 4. 4 colleges in America had introduced eugenics into their curriculums, and such courses were particularly popular at such elite schools as Harvard, Columbia, Cornell and Brown. By 1. 92. 4, more than 9,0. Eugenics Research Association could boast that a third of its 3. American Association for the Advancement of Science, the national. He charted the family histories of 7. If he expanded the definition of what could be considered abnormal behavior, and thus could include people who were . This was very close to the precise number he needed to conclude that insanity was a single gene recessive disorder, transmitted much like blue eyes. If a child inherited a copy of the normalcy gene from one parent and the insanity gene from another, he or she would grow up to be normal but would be a . A child who got the insanity gene from both parents was doomed to be insane as an adult, he wrote. This . Their genes were a threat to society's collective gene pool. Meanwhile, in their writings, eugenicists described the mentally ill. With such declarations influencing the American mind, 6. In addition, it set the stage for psychiatry, in the 1. The therapeutic reasoning was easy to understand: If the mentally ill had little value, and were generally . The first three such therapies were insulin coma therapy, metrazole convulsive therapy, and repetitious electroshock therapy. The fourth was frontal lobotomy, which at the time was hailed as a miracle brain surgery. Today, as a society, we would never conclude that we hold . Yet, it is easy to see today that our modern research agenda has encouraged eugenic conceptions of the mentally ill and encouraged the adoption of policies that rob people so diagnosed of their basic rights. In 1. 98. 0, when American psychiatry published its third edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, it informed the public that mental disorders were now to be thought of as . The mentally ill were said to have . The root cause was an internal biological flaw with the person. With this conception in mind, NIMH- funded researchers renewed a quest, first born in the eugenics era, to identify a genetic basis for psychiatric disorders. There is, of course, an understandable therapeutic rationale for such research. If a biological pathology, arising from a genetic defect, can be identified, then it would provide a target for drug development. In 1. 98. 0, with the publication of DSM- III, the field became ideologically committed to telling a certain story, which is that mental disorders are brain diseases. As such, the field became committed to proving that this was so, and we can see this ideological impulse in many of the published findings. You find it in particular in the MRI studies, in which researchers may announce that some abnormality or another has been found in a group of patients, without making an effort to distinguish whether the abnormality is medication induced. When that happens, ideology is trumping honest inquiry and science, and it is impossible, as such moments, to not be reminded of Aaron Rosanoff, and his desire to report that insanity was a single gene recessive disorder. In terms of shaping public opinion about mental illness, what has this modern genetics research wrought? Those eugenic conceptions are now showing up in our social polices, and this can be clearly seen in our society. The public has been encouraged to . Today, people may get released from hospitals, but if they are under an outpatient commitment order, they certainly are not . They may be forced to take medications that they do not want to take, and if they complain that the drugs make them feel like . Such people may not be under a legal order, but still feel coerced. They may have to take medications they don. If a person living in society is being forced to take a medication he or she does not want to take, . Their right to liberty has been compromised. Now, let. Only this time, instead of focusing on what is named on the list, let. See if you can find even one item that tells of research designed to help living, breathing human beings get well and stay well. See if you can find anything. In this manner, the Quakers hoped to . They believed that their mad brethren had a God- given inner capacity for regaining self- control and reason, and thus their therapeutic challenge was to provide a gentle environment that could best promote such healing. In fairly short order, the Quakers in York reported that this care was proving to be quite successful, and in the first decades of the 1. Quakers in the United States built a number of such small retreats, in the countryside outside Boston, Philadelphia, Hartford and other cities. The patients were encouraged to garden, exercise, take long walks, and engage in social activities. And this therapy worked. Modern historians who have reviewed the records of these retreats have determined that more than half of the newly insane would be discharged within three years. If the Quakers from the early 1. Imagine if the NIMH revisited this history and funded studies mindful of the lessons to be gleaned from it. NIMH- funded investigators, rather than seeing people with a psychiatric diagnosis as having an innate defect, would see them instead as . The Quakers found that diet, exercise, meaningful work and social engagement were a recipe that could help many disturbed people get better, and I imagine that if the NIMH invested in this idea today, researchers would discover anew their benefits. Yet. The NIMH has published a list of its. |
